He said: “We’ve missed Nina, John and Ben in the studio (they’ve been on the road – reporting on the election and the Euros) but we’ll be all be back together on the red sofa soon”[/caption]

The 54-year-old posted a snap showing him, Sally Nugent and fan-favourite Carol Kirkwood on the show’s set.

As the trio smiled for the capture Jon penned a heartfelt tribute to Nina Warhurst and Ben Boulos who have been missing from the show.

He explained how they’ve been sent on the road as BBC Breakfast‘s roving reporters for the General Election campaign and UEFA Euros.

Jon said: “Thorn between two roses? And it looks like “the thorn” has cricked his neck!

“Seriously, how lucky am I? Another great week working with these two.

“We’ve missed Nina, John and Ben in the studio (they’ve been on the road – reporting on the election and the Euros) but we’ll be all be back together on the red sofa soon.

“Great work, team. Thanks for joining us all on #bbcbreakfast.”

Jon’s post comes after Carol Kirkwood, 62, shut him down during Wednesday’s episode.

As Carol was bringing viewers the latest weather Jon got his hopes up when she revealed there was sunshine on the way.

Jon said: “Okay, I mean that looks lovely, doesn’t it? Perfect for lots of people. Does this look like it’s the beginning of a prolonged drier spell?”

After an awkward moment of silence, Carol replied: “Not necessarily…” before she burst out laughing.

The penny soon dropped as Jon replied: “Okay, right”.

She added quickly: “Let’s leave it at that for now, shall we?”

BBC Breakfast airs daily from 6am on BBC One and iPlayer.
