I was told Black girls can’t grow long hair – my routine has proved naysayers wrong, an investment buy healed my locks
A BLACK woman has revealed the secret to her enviable hair growth after being repeatedly told she’d never have long locks.
She raved about the products and a pricey tool that keeps her tresses healthy even when chemically straightening her hair.
She shared a photo of her lengthy locks on Reddit’s Long Hair forum, which has over 499,000 members.
HAIR HERO
The beauty enthusiast said her hair growth defied a common assumption about afro hair.
“Finally at my goal length after a lifetime of being told that ‘black girls can’t grow long hair,’” she said, writing under the handle Pettyminaj.
She revealed that heat tools and chemical treatments have remained part of her routine while growing her locks.
“I relax my hair once every 4 months and wash/use Olaplex/straighten with heat protectant every 2 weeks,” she said.
“I contribute having access to Olaplex 1&2 + my Dyson blow dryer to the majority of my hair growth.
“It was only an inch or so past my shoulders a year ago and hadn’t grown in years until I just stopped with my complicated routine and just handled it every two weeks!”
Olaplex Bond Multiplier No.1 costs $99.99 and Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer is $299.99 at Walmart.
Both products have been highly rated by shoppers and have glowing reviews.
The Redditor revealed that she never trims her split ends because there’s “no need.”
She said that previously using a “low quality” Revlon 1 Step hair dryer would cause breakage.
“Dyson is higher quality and isn’t nearly as damaging to the hair and doesn’t have as much direct heat used to achieve the same result,” she said.
FOLLICLE FRENZY
Hundreds of people upvoted her post and gushed about her healthy locks.
“I’m over here wishing I had your hair! It looks so good and healthy!” one person commented.
“Looks fantastic! Black girls can do whatever they want!” another wrote.

“I’ve never seen or noticed such amazing long thick hair of this type outside braids!
“I think I grew up in the heyday of black girls & classmates with ultra-thick curly (‘kinky’ they used to say Vs mine being ‘dead hair’ lol) being constantly tamed with harsh processing and all these searing heat tools to have them ‘set it’ – or super tight braids that seemed headache-inducing at the scalp.
“I’m doing a triple take!!! Awesome post.”
According to Healthline, hair-drying methods vary by type with those with thicker locks benefiting from a protective product and dryer.
People with thin, wavy, or dyed hair should air dry to retain moisture.
Experts recommend using a dryer on low heat from at least 6 inches away on damp rather than “soaking wet” hair.
