Canada officially designated Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization, a senior cabinet member said on Wednesday.

“Canada will use all possible tools to combat terrorist activities carried out by the IRGC,” Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc told reporters, saying the announcement reflected “very strong and compelling evidence”.

Prior to this, sources, including Iran International and CBC News, reported that the Canadian government intended to designate the IRGC as a terrorist organization.

When a group is placed on a country’s list of terrorist organizations, the police can charge those who financially or materially support the group, and banks can freeze their assets.

This development comes after years of pressure from the Association of Families of Flight PS752 Victims, the Iranian-Canadian community, the Conservative Party, and the New Democratic Party to classify the entire IRGC as a terrorist entity.

Last month, Canadian Parliament members unanimously voted in favor of this action.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps is a branch of Iran’s armed forces directly accountable to Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei.

This group shot down Flight PS752 over Tehran’s skies in January 2020, resulting in 175 fatalities, including 55 Canadian citizens and 30 permanent residents of Canada. Among the victims were also Afghan citizens.
