Understanding my preauricular pit, a tiny hole in my head often mistaken for a piercing

I've always had a small hole in the side of my head but people have never really believed that I was born with it. When I was younger I'd stick an earring in it just to prove to my friends it wasn't something I'd done myself - grim, I know.
