Natalie Gillis named as pilot in fatal Colonie crash

COLONIE, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Natalie Gillis, a Canadian pilot known for her adventurous spirit and commitment to environmental conservation, tragically passed away on June 17, 2024, in Albany, New York. She was 34 years old.

Born in 1990, Natalie's love for exploration and nature led her to graduate from the University of Guelph in 2013 with a degree in Environmental Governance and Political Science. She was not only a pilot but also a photographer, poet, and wilderness guide.

Natalie's passion for flying was ignited during the pandemic, when she seized the opportunity to complete her ratings and licensing, eventually becoming a certified airline transport pilot. In September 2023, she joined KASI Aviation Services as a pilot, where she became involved in R-evolution’s Green Cubes project, focusing on rainforest conservation. Her work took her to remote corners of the world, from the South Pole to the Arctic, where she flew missions for adventurers, explorers, and filmmakers.

In 2022, Natalie was elected a Fellow of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society (RCGS). Her photograph of a polar bear graced the cover of Canadian Geographic’s January/February issue. The RCGS expressed their sorrow, stating, "We are deeply saddened by the passing of Royal Canadian Geographical Society Fellow and Canadian Geographic contributor Natalie Gillis."

Natalie's brother, Matthew Yap, announced her passing on Facebook, inviting friends and family to celebrate her life. He described Natalie as a "beloved daughter, sister, and friend," emphasizing her love for flying and dedication to her work.

KASI Aeronautics also shared their condolences, stating, “We are heartbroken by this loss, and our thoughts and sincere sympathies go out to the family and those close to her.”

Natalie also held a master’s degree in creative and critical writing from the University of Gloucestershire in the UK. Her life was marked by a commitment to conservation, a love for adventure, and a dedication to her craft. Natalie Gillis leaves behind a legacy of inspiration and will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
