Topeka kids learn the history of Juneteenth

TOPEKA (KSNT) - The Kansas Children's Discovery Center hosted a variety of events to teach the next generation about the state's newest holiday, Juneteenth.

One of those was an educational storytelling. Reader Daisy Karimi thinks that teaching from the ground up is important.

"Because everybody understands what a birthday is. This is another way, and then introducing it in higher levels," Karimi said.

Today's experience gave her a positive outlook on the time ahead.

"They give me warmth because they show me what the future is going to be, and they showed us that it's going to be bright and just lovely," Karimi said. "And, that makes me so happy on so many levels."

Her main objective is to teach everyone something new.

Kamilah Njoroge is nine-years-old from Topeka who attended Wednesday's storytelling events.

"Today is Juneteenth...," Njoroge said. "It's like 4th of July, but it's in June."

Soon, the discovery center plans to break ground on a $10 million expansion that will double its size, and provide more space for events like this one.

The discovery center also has a children's civil rights exhibit open until August 11th.
