Angels Rest Trail in Columbia River Gorge reopens after aggressive cougar sightings

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – Nearly a week after more than one aggressive cougar sighting, the Angels Rest Trail in the Columbia River Gorge is expected to reopen Thursday morning.

The U.S. Forest Service temporarily closed the area on June 12 following at least two reports of a cougar stalking people. One hiker said the cougar took a swipe at them, and a second reported a cougar stalking them on the trail roughly an hour later.

Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, Wildlife Services and Oregon State Police responded to the scene after the cougar encounter was reported. They say the closure was to give the cougar time to leave the area.

No additional sightings have been reported in the area since.

If you find yourself in the presence of a cougar, Oregon State Parks offers the following safety tips:

• Hike in groups and make noise
• Stay alert by avoiding headphones
• Keeping dogs on a leash
• Carrying bear spray or an air horn

If you encounter a cougar, officials advise you to stay calm and back away while facing the animal. Don’t run and maintain eye contact while appearing large and making noise.
