Report: Tottenham actually tried to sign Championship wonderkid last year

The Athletic have revealed Archie Gray has been on Tottenham’s radar for quite a while, with the North London side said to have failed with a move for the youngster last year.

Gray enjoyed a breakthrough 2023-24 season, with the teenager showing his versatility while operating at right-back as well as in midfield.

Tottenham are thought to be eyeing the 18-year-old as a replacement for Emerson Royal, who is expected to depart the club this summer.

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold was the latest to make this claim on Monday, with the journalist stating that the Leeds academy graduate is seen as someone who would be a natural fit for the inverted full-back role in Ange Postecoglou’s system.

However, Gold revealed that the youngster might decide to remain at Elland Road next season as he wants to continue playing regularly for the time being.

The Athletic have now also backed up Tottenham’s interest in Gray and they claim that the right-back has been on Tottenham’s radar for a long time.

In fact, it is asserted that the Lilywhites explored a move for the England Under-21 international before he signed his professional contract with Leeds back in March of last year.

Spurs allegedly tried to tempt Gray to Hotspur Way with an offer at the time but he turned that down in favour of remaining at his boyhood club. The publication adds that the player was ‘tracked extensively’ by Tottenham throughout last season.

One would expect Tottenham to test the waters with an offer for Gray this summer, given Leeds’ current financial situation.

However, the move might depend on whether Postecoglou’s men are able to convince the youngster and his entourage to make the move.
