Family calls for forensic pathologist to help with police investigation

Attorneys representing two siblings of deceased Kemo Grant are calling for greater transparency in the investigation into his death.

On June 9, Grant, 29, was found unresponsive in the prisoners’ cells at the Central Police Station in Bridgetown around 7:35 a.m.

During a media briefing today, attorneys Martie Garnes and Tyra Trotman said the police were using a general pathologist to conduct the autopsy when the family preferred to have the process completed by a forensic pathologist.

“A forensic pathologist goes further to identify cause of death. We are saying, if we have the expert available, why not use him?” asked Garnes, adding there was only one such person on the island.

He said the police invited their clients – Tricia and Kim Grant – to identify the body but they had not done so yet as they wanted the services of the forensic pathologist, which would include a toxicology report ordered from overseas.

Trotman said there was much public speculation regarding Kemo’s death and the best way to put the issue to rest was utilising the forensic pathologist.

Commissioner of Police Richard Boyce announced a senior police officer would lead the investigation. Grant was said to be alive when a cell inspection was also conducted at 6:50 a.m. (CA)
