Gloversville Police Officer accused of misconduct

GLOVERSVILLE, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- A City of Gloversville Police Officer was arrested and is accused of tampering with public records and misconduct, according to the New York State Police. Chance Petteys, 21, faces multiple charges.

On May 7, the City of Gloversville Police Department Administration brought to light allegations of misconduct against a law enforcement officer in their department, identified as Petteys. New York State Police initiated an investigation, and say Petteys, who'd been employed with the department since April 2023, had abused his authority by accessing records and sensitive personal information, as well as past police interactions.

Petteys is also accused of turning off his body-worn camera to conceal his actions. State Police say Petteys also accessed records without legitimate law enforcement purposes and would occasionally use that information to contact individuals after police interactions.

Charges:

  • Computer trespass
  • Official misconduct
  • Unauthorized use of a computer
  • Second-degree tampering with public records

Petteys turned himself in to Fonda State Police where he was processed. He was given an appearance ticket to return to the Gloversville City Court on June 24 and was released.

During the investigation, New York State Police say Petteys was on administrative leave and the City of Gloversville Police were fully cooperative. The Fulton County District Attorney’s Office and the New York State Attorney General’s Law Enforcement Misconduct Investigative Office were promptly informed. The Fulton County District Attorney’s Office has recused themselves and the case has been reassigned to a special prosecutor from the Saratoga County District Attorney’s Office.

Anyone who believes they may also be a victim of Petteys is asked to contact Fonda State Police at (518) 457-6811, or email crimetip@troopers.ny.gov.
