Tom Clifford is an expert at Gardenstone, a UK-based company specializing in garden landscaping products.

Speaking to The U.S. Sun, he shared advice for a thriving green lawn.

HEALTHY HYDRATION

Clifford revealed the best strategy for watering lawns during hot weather.

“Sprinkle your lawn with water on an evening,” he said.

“This is important as if you water it mid-day you will find that the water will likely evaporate and your soil will not absorb it.

“I recommend reusing water wherever possible to avoid water wastage, this can be as simple as using water from your kids’ swimming pool or even leftover cups of water.

“To go the extra mile you can even install a water-butt to collect as much rainwater as possible.”

Watering lawns regularly isn’t the only factor to consider to keep grass healthy.

“Try to avoid walking across your lawn as much as possible, although this can be hard when the weather is nice it can place unnecessary stress onto your lawn,” he said.

“During hot periods your lawn will likely already be weak so this added stress can make the situation ten times worse.”

BANISH BARRENNESS

Clifford said two solutions are worth trying if your lawn has bare patches.

“For patches of your lawn that won’t grow it may be a good idea to replace the area with a new patch of turf,” he said.

“This turf can be from a discrete area of your garden or if possible newly bought.

“Once you have fitted the new area of turf make sure that you water it two or three times a day for the first few days.

“Within a few weeks, the patch should blend seamlessly with the rest of your lawn.”

Alternatively, he said the patches can be reseeded.

You may have to be patient with results as the new grass may take a few months to grow.

“This process is fairly quick and pain-free but will require some upkeep during the first few mows,” he said.

“You may have to be patient with results as the new grass may take a few months to grow.

“In the meantime avoid walking over this area of grass as this may disrupt the process.”

Clifford previously told The U.S. Sun that lawns should be mowed “at least once a fortnight” to stay healthy.

He said lawns can become vulnerable to weeds if more than one-third of the grass is mowed at once.

He advised spot-treating any weeds “quickly and effectively” to prevent them from spreading.
