Ellis Residential and Rehabilitation Center to close

The Ellis Residential and Rehabilitation Center (ERCC) will close in the coming months. Ellis Medicine announced on Tuesday.

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The Ellis Residential and Rehabilitation Center (ERCC) will close in the coming months. Ellis Medicine announced on Tuesday.

The group had an extensive two-year search to find a new operator to take over the nursing home but was unable to do so. The closure plan, approved and overseen by the New York State Department of Health, will help provide a smooth transition for all residents.

Ellis Medicine outlined its plan to ensure that the transition for ERCC residents goes as smoothly as possible. The plan will assess each resident's need for continued skilled nursing care, help find residents suitable alternate facilities, partner with community organizations, offer medical records, care plans, and medication orders to new facilities to continue resident treatment, work at the residents' pace, and evaluate and arrange appropriate transportation to new facilities.

Ellis Medicine will also host a community meeting on Wednesday, June 26 at the Robb Auditorium at the McClellan Street Health Center from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

“Closing ERRC is a heart-wrenching decision, especially considering the excellent care our staff has provided over the years,” said Paul Milton, President & CEO of Ellis Medicine. “However, the underutilization of the 18-acre McClellan campus and the resulting financial burden have made it clear that we must always be evaluating where we focus our resources to remain viable in a challenging healthcare environment.”
