Nicholas Pooran makes history with 36-runs in a single over against Afghanistan
Several records were made and broken during the T20 World Cup 2024 clash between West Indies and Afghanistan. When batting first, West Indies hit 218/5 in 20 overs with Nicholas Pooran striking an astonighing 98 off 53 balls. Even though this score was the highest total in the ongoing T20 World Cup, the main highlight of this innings was marked with Pooram’s entry into the elite list of batters, smashing 36 runs in an over in a World Cup Match.
This memorable feat was achieved in the fourth over, when Pooran unleashed all his fury on Afghanistan’s all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai. The 28-year-old batsman hit three sixes and two boundaries, while also getting 5 wides, 4 leg byes and a no-ball in that over.
This was the second time in 2024 that 36 runs were scored in an over against Afghanistan. Earlier this year, the Indian duo of Rohit Sharma and Rinku Singh also achieved the same feat, when they thrashed Karim Janat.
This was the fourth highest powerplay score in the history of T20Is. The Windies also recorded the highest powerplay score in the history of the T20 World Cup after scoring 92 in their first 6 overs. The previous record was held by the Netherlands with a score of 91 in T20 World Cup 2014. England is ranked third in this list having scored 89 runs in T20 World Cup 2016.
Apart from the astonishing 36 runs in a single over, Pooran also scored 98 in 53 balls to help his team reach a grand total of 218-run total in the final group game before the Super Eight Phase. This knock along with a brilliant bowling performance helped West Indies in thrashing Afghanistan by 104 runs. They also continued their unbeaten run in the tournament with this win.
