New Zealand pacer Lockie Ferguson created history against Papua New Guinea by bowling the most economical spell in T20I history. Ferguson didn’t give away a single run in his quota of 4 overs and also took 3 wickets. He dismissed the likes of PNG skipper Assad Vala, Charles Amini and Chad Soper.

In addition, Ferguson became only the second bowler after Saad Bin Zafar to not concede a run in T20Is. This unbelievable spell helped New Zealand in ending their T20 World Cup campaign on a high as they bowled out PNG for only 78 runs and achieved the small target of 79 runs in only 12.2 overs.

Ferguson’s spell was also the most economical spell bowled in the history of the T20 World Cup as he beat the record of his teammate Tim Southee who only conceded 4 runs and took 3 wickets in his quota of 4 overs in New Zealand’s previous game against Uganda.

Before Southee, this record was held by Ugandan spinner Frank Nsubuga who also gave away only 4 runs and took 2 wickets in his quota of 4 overs in Uganda’s group stage match against PNG.

Despite the win, New Zealand were eliminated from the tournament as they only managed to get 4 points in Group C while West Indies topped the group with 8 points and Afghanistan finished second with 6 points.

The three time semifinalists and runner ups from the 2021 edition of the tournament are one of the biggest teams to be knocked out of the competition in the group stages.
