'Nonsense — do your time': Steve Bannon's bid to avoid jail slapped down on CNN

MAGA influencer and convicted criminal Steve Bannon is still trying to get out of serving his jail sentence, but CNN legal analyst Elliot Williams suggested on Tuesday that it's time for him to pipe down and pay his debt to society.

While discussing Bannon's upcoming time in prison, Williams took a shot at the latest rationale Bannon is deploying to keep himself from being put behind bars after he was found guilty of criminal contempt of Congress nearly two years ago.

"The thing that I found more remarkable about Bannon here is that his lawyers tried to make the argument that, in an election year, because people will rely upon his opinions, he can't go to jail right now," he said. "That is such a white-collar crime notion! You get it all the time where these guys, on the eve of going to jail, say, 'The public relies on me, my family, my shareholders, I can't possibly go to jail!' And it's just nonsense: Do your time."

Williams acknowledged Bannon has the right to file as many appeals as possible, but he then ridiculed the notion that "Steve Bannon is too important to go to jail."

"Just ridiculous," Williams concluded.

Bannon is due to report to prison next month where he is due to serve a four-month prison sentence that will keep him out of the public eye right up to the 2024 presidential election.

Fellow Trump ally Peter Navarro, who was also convicted of criminal contempt of Congress, is already serving his prison sentence and is due to be released next month.
