A COUPLE have been left distraught after missing their own wedding reception.

The petite woman tried to pick her 21stone hubby up for a playful photo but ended up snapping her ankle in the process, leading her to head to the hospital than the £5,500 ($7,000) reception they forked out for.

Shocking video footage shows the moment the 27-year-old medical assistant screamed in pain as her ankle suddenly gave way under 30-year-old Blake’s weight.

The pair, who had only been married for an hour, were devastated to have to leave their 150 guests at the venue and rush to hospital.

Doctors confirmed Mary had broken her ankle – with the newlyweds forced to spend their wedding night in the ER while guests partied without them.

Despite their £5,500 dream wedding being cut short on October 12th 2019, the couple now laugh at the unexpected turn of events and hope to redo their reception in the future.

Mary, from Boston, Kentucky, US, said: “When we arrived at the venue, the DJ was still setting up and we decided to kill a bit of time by taking some silly pictures outside in a field.

“For one of them Blake leaned over my back and I was very proud I was holding him up – it was a funny picture.

“His brother held onto his feet trying to keep us steady but that actually made us fall forward with my feet staying pointed on the ground.

“Pretty immediately I knew my ankle was broken, it was like it happened in slow motion.

“I didn’t hear a snap but I could feel a burn in my left ankle. I remember saying ‘my ankle is broken!’ and I don’t think people thought I was serious at first but then they saw how swollen it was.”

Doctors confirmed Mary’s ankle was broken in two places and would require surgery.

One image shows the pair in hospital in their wedding outfits with Mary, who is sitting in a wheelchair, looking glumly at the camera.

They only left at 2am so guests had to attend their reception without them, yet Blake says the party only lasted around an hour because they were missing.

The machinist, who got engaged to Mary on July 2nd 2018, admits he still feels responsible for their dream day going awry.

Are wedding rules right or wrong?

By Josie Griffiths, Fabulous deputy editor and bride-to-be

When I was planning my wedding this August, the idea of sending out a list of ‘rules’ never once popped into my mind.

The first two this bride created seem fair enough, but also like they should be common sense, and then they just descend into chaos.

Insisting on “approving” all photos before they go out and ordering guests to stick to a “minimalist” colour palette seems pretty OTT to me.

And rudely telling guests to leave you alone when you arrive at the ceremony and eat your dinner – while also ordering them to come say goodbye before leaving – is a bit mad.

I don’t know how many guests this bride is inviting, but everyone knows weddings can get a bit manic. Of course it’d be nice to greet and say goodbye to everyone personally, but I’ve come to peace with the fact that probably won’t happen.

Like with everything in life, once you get yourself in a tizz about everything happening a certain way, you’re basically setting yourself up for failure.

I don’t pretend to be the most laid-back bride ever and I can’t promise I won’t get a bit stressed if we’re running loads behind on the morning of my wedding, but this is just massively over the top.

I agree with the commenters, I wouldn’t bother going.

Blake said: “Obviously Mary was very upset and I was very worried about my new wife. I’d only had her for about an hour at this point.

“I’m okay talking about it now but it still hurts me. It’s more the fact that me falling is what broke her ankle. I kind of blame myself.

“As far as we know, the guests carried on. We had all this food and drinks and the DJ was set up so I think the guests had a good time but it was very short.

“I don’t think it lasted longer than an hour.

“I think it just turned into dinner with a bit of music in the background.”

Mary, who has since had 12 screws and a plate inserted into her ankle, said she now looks back at the incident and laughs despite her initial upset.

Mary said: “I definitely got some funny looks sitting in the ER in my wedding dress.

“I wasn’t upset that my ankle was broken. I was more upset that we had put so much time, money, effort into planning a whole wedding and we had to miss that.

“At the time I was really upset we missed out on it but now I’ve been able to look back and kind of laugh.”

Blake was forced to rearrange the surprise honeymoon to Disney World, Florida, he’d planned but the couple were able to take the trip six weeks later – with Mary riding a mobility scooter.
