Heat advisory issued for north, west of NYC as temps surge over 90 degrees
NEW YORK (PIX11) – A heat advisory was issued Tuesday for areas north and west of New York City as temperatures will surge over 90 degrees.
An excessive heat watch was also issued for inland areas starting Wednesday, as some parts of the tri-state area will see the heat index pass 100 degrees.
A heat wave is defined as three or more days of dangerous, extreme heat. New York City officials are worried about excessive heat in areas with no air conditioning and those who are working outside, as air quality is also a concern.
The city is handing out 1,000 cool kits for delivery workers and those who work outside, Mayor Eric Adams said. Those kits include a cooling towel, cold pack, electrolyte mix and sunscreen.
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said this type of heat is the worst weather emergency for the tri-state area. Cooling centers will open Tuesday across the state to help people beat the heat.
In New Jersey, Newark reached 92 degrees on Monday.
Several buildings in New Jersey's largest school district of Newark are over 100 years old and don't have air conditioning. Education advocates are pleading for more AC units be brought in.
"… We have prioritized providing air conditioning in large spaces such as cafeterias to provide temporary relief and limited outdoor activities as necessary," Newark City School District said in a statement.
Luckily, students are off Wednesday for Juneteenth and Friday is early dismissal at 1 p.m. to celebrate the last day at school.
