Ally McCoist has criticised Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg for exaggerating a foul and trying to get his opponent booked in Denmark’s Euros opener against Slovenia.

Hojbjerg is at the Euros with Denmark

Denmark played out a 1-1 draw against Slovenia at the MHPArena over the weekend, with Christian Eriksen’s 17th-minute goal cancelled out by Erik Janza’s 77th-minute equaliser.

Hojbjerg played 83 minutes before being replaced by Christian Norgaard but the Tottenham man and his teammates will be disappointed with the result, having dominated for much of the encounter.

They now face a big challenge to qualify for the knockout stages, with England and Serbia being the other two sides in Group C.

Hojbjerg mastering the dark arts in Germany

In the clash against Slovenia, Hojbjerg was involved in an incident just after the interval, which McCoist was not impressed by.

Petar Stojanovic miscontrolled the ball on the edge of Denmark’s final third, allowing the Spurs man to latch onto possession.

When Stojanovic planted his foot in an attempt to win the ball back, Hojbjerg went to the ground and was seemingly in a lot of pain as he rolled on the floor.

However, the replays showed that contact was quite minimal and McCoist felt that the 28-year-old’s antics were completely uncalled for.

He told ITV (broadcast on 16/6; 18:11) about the incident: “Listen, it’s a free-kick. Of course, it’s a free-kick, catches his right foot a little bit. Not sure it was worth all the histrionics. In fact, I’ll tell you right now, it wasn’t deserving of it all.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Hojbjerg is a street-smart footballer who knows all the dark arts and like many modern-day players, he is willing to toe the line and do what it takes to give his side an advantage.
