The Mets have certainly created a buzz over the last week, but there is one player who has put the Mets back on track. J.D. Martinez has been awarded the National League Player of the Week for his efforts over the last six games. Martinez marks the second Met this season to win such an award, dating back to April 15, when Pete Alonso was named Player of the Week. The Mets signed Martinez back on March 21 due to his proven track record as a professional hitter, but lower back tightness derailed his debut with the ball club.

Since Martinez made his Mets debut, it was clear he would be a major contributor once he found his rhythm. He proved that this past week, as Martinez collected his 12th Player of the Week Award, most recently with the Dodgers in the 2023 season. The 36-year-old hit .450 with three home runs (two in the same game), 9 RBIs, three doubles, six walks, five runs scored, and a 1.050 slugging percentage. His most notable moment last week was the walk-off home run against the Marlins. Out of his 323 home runs over his lengthy career, that was his first-ever walk-off home run. However, it was his fourth walk-off hit.

The three-time Silver Slugger Award winner reached another accomplishment dating back to March 24. Over his last 20 games, he has reached base safely once in each game, which makes it the 6th longest on-base streak in his career. Martinez’s longest streak is 34 straight games that started at the end of the 2021 season and ended at the start of the 2022 season.

During his 20-game streak, he has hit .291 with six home runs, 18 RBIs, five doubles, a triple, 11 walks, 13 runs, and a .999 OPS. Martinez is now one of eleven players in Major League Baseball history who have had 12 or more Player of the Week awards. He has surpassed Aaron Judge (11) and is now leading among all active players for the award.
