First All-Star voting update shows Salvador Perez, Bobby Witt Jr. each in second place

The first update on MLB All-Star voting was released today, revealing that Bobby Witt Jr. and Salvador Perez are each trailing in their bid to get voted in as a starter for the Midsummer Classic.

At the catcher position, Salvador Perez has 588,952 votes, trailing Baltimore’s Adley Rutschman’s 792,857 votes. New York’s Jose Trevino, Toronto’s Danny Jansen, and Texas’ Jonah Heim round out the top five catchers. Salvy was previously elected by fans in 2015, 2016, and 2021.

Bobby Witt Jr. has received 541,261 votes at the shortstop position so far, but trails Baltimore’s Gunnar Henderson, who has 740,436 votes. New York’s Anthony Volpe, Texas’ Corey Seager, and Toronto’s Bo Bichette round out the top five. Bobby is making a bid to earn his first All-Star appearance.

Michael Massey is faring surprisingly well in voting at second base, despite missing significant time with a back injury. He has received 341,510 votes, good enough for third behind Houston’s Jose Altuve (620,724 votes) and Texas’ Marcus Semien (539,223).

Voting for Phase 1 will take place through June 27, upon which the top two vote-getters at each position (and top six for outfield) will advance to a run-off that ends on June 30. Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge and the Phillies first baseman Bryce Harper have the most votes in their respective league so far. The leading vote-getters will get an automatic starting nod without having to have a run-off.
