RORY McILROY was left devastated after narrowly missing out on the US Open title.
The 35-year-old came agonisingly close to ending his 10-year wait for a major title on Sunday.
However, with five holes left to play he carded three bogeys to squander a two-shot lead over Bryson DeChambeau.
McIlroy handed his rival an unexpected lifeline after missing a par putt from four feet on the final hole.
And DeChambeau grabbed the opportunity with both hands to wrap up the title.
McIlroy watched on in despair as the American completed his final shot before heading straight back to the locker room.
After returning inside, he appeared completely deflated and on the verge of tears as he stood in silence alongside his caddie.
McIlroy then left Pinehurst Resort immediately, missing the final ceremony.
He also refused to speak to the media.
DeChambeau expressed sympathy towards McIlroy after winning the title.

He said: “For him to miss that putt, I’d never wish it on anybody.
“Rory will win multiple more major championships. There’s no doubt. I think that fire in him is going to continue to grow.”
