Trump 'intending to humiliate' whatever 'spiritually broken' person is his VP: CNN panel

A CNN panel on Monday contended that former President Donald Trump will only accept a vice presidential nominee who has absolutely no will of their own and who will allow themselves to be humiliated on the former president's behalf.

In discussing Trump's potential VP pick, ex-George W. Bush speechwriter David Frum made the case that Sen. J.D. Vance and North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum are too potentially independent minded to be the nominee.

"He learned his lesson with Mike Pence," he said. "He thought with Pence he'd found someone who's deferential, who was subordinated, but at the last moment, Pence shows some integrity, some constitutional loyalty, and for that he was nearly killed."

This last point was in reference to the fact that Pence refused to go along with Trump's unconstitutional scheme to throw away certified election results and was made the target of Trump-loving rioters who stormed the Capitol and called for Pence's hanging.

Turning to Vance and Burgum, Frum explained why both men could be ruled out as Trump's picks.

"J.D. Vance is not a man of high character but he is a man of high intellect," said Frum. "And Trump can't trust him. It's the same thing with Doug Burgum... he's not a man of great charisma but he is a man of great achievement. Trump can't trust him! But you can trust a Tim Scott because he's a zero, and you can trust Marco Rubio because he's spiritually broken. So I think he's going to look for one of those more negligible human beings."

Democratic strategist Kate Bedingfield shared Frum's overall take and predicted that a high threshold for humiliation would be necessary for any Trump VP.

"He is intended to humiliate these people and they are more than happy to let it happen," she said.
