Jeremy Strong, Sarah Paulson, and Angelina Jolie are officially on EGOT-watch

0

A few key stories have emerged with the dust settling on the 77th Annual Tony Awards. One, we should have seen “Merrily We Roll Along” when we had the chance (it closes July 7!). Two, it’s great that Brooke Shields has broken the Crocs-red carpet barrier. And three, why does Eddie Redmayne singing directly into the camera give us the willies?

With that out of the way, though, awards-obsessives can crack out their abacuses and start making charts to see who is getting closer to achieving EGOT status.

EGOT, of course, stands for Emmys, Grammys, Oscars, Tonys, and while Sunday night didn’t put anyone over the top, we have a few celebs who can start giving it serious thought.

Sarah Paulson won her first Tony for Best Actress in a Play, for Branden Jacobs-Jenkens’s dysfunctional family drama “Appropriate.” (She stars opposite Michael Esper, Elle Fanning, and Corey Stoll.) Paulson is a seven-time Emmy nominee and one-time winner for “The People vs. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story.” (Paulson can add to her Emmys tally this year thanks to guest appearances on “The Bear” and “Mr. & Mrs. Smith.) The actress has several films in various stages of pre-production, including something called “Clybourne Park” with Martin Freeman and Nick Robinson. Sight unseen, that’s a title that is just begging for a debut at the Telluride Film Festival and some Oscar nominations. As for an eventual Grammy, the easiest path for someone like Paulson is to record some audiobooks.

Jeremy Strong also finds himself with a Tony on his shelf after Sunday night, for his work opposite Michael Imperioli in a new adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s “An Enemy of the People.” It joins his Emmy for “Succession.” Strong already should have an Oscar for his work in James Gray’s “Armageddon Time,” but maybe all hopes lie on his turn as Roy Cohn in Ali Abbasi’s portrait of Donald Trump, “The Apprentice,” if it ever comes out in the U.S., that is. Grammy-wise, I bet there’s some poetry lurking within Mr. Strong. He needs to team with a songwriter, get some lyrics down on paper, and glide into that Grammy as the second half of a Best Song collaboration team. (He can use “L to the OG” for inspiration.)

Angelina Jolie did not appear on Broadway this season, but she was working behind the scenes. As such, she’s now got a Tony as a co-producer on Best Musical winner “The Outsiders.” It joins her Oscar for “Girl, Interrupted,” but, shockingly, she has never won an Emmy. (She got the Golden Globe for “Gia,” but not the Emmy somehow.) She’s been nominated several times, and this seems like a breeze, really. One guest shot on a primo show and it’s in the bag, right? As for the Grammy, there are 94 categories! If Angelina Jolie can’t figure out an angle for one of them, she’s not the Angelina Jolie we know and love.
