One hospitalized after rifle fired during Islamic ceremony in west Columbus

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – One of the biggest Islamic holidays was interrupted by gunfire in west Columbus, hospitalizing one person early Monday morning.

According to Columbus police, gunfire broke out during a ceremony for Eid al-Adha, the Feast of Sacrifice. The observance took place at Glenview Park on North Eureka Avenue early Monday morning, when police say an unidentified man produced a rifle and began firing the weapon at 1:57 a.m.

One man was struck in the knee and was taken to an area hospital where he was treated for his injuries. Police said none of the attendees were able to identify the shooter.

Eid al-Adha, also known as the Celebration of the Offering which indicates the end of the Hajj Pilgrimage, is celebrated following the sighting of the crescent moon, which began at sunset on Sunday. Eid al-Adha represents a time of prayer, reflection and sacrifice.
