Aaron Lazar is making his first major public appearance since the announcement of his ALS diagnosis.

The 47-year-old Broadway actor was joined by his wife LeAnn on the red carpet at the 2024 Tony Awards on Sunday (June 16) at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City.

Aaron announced his ALS diagnosis in January 2024 and revealed he had been fighting the disease for the past two years. In a new interview, he explained why he’s not going to fight the disease.

“When I got diagnosed, I thought, ‘Well, my new impossible dream is to beat this,’” Aaron said on The Broadway Show with Tamsen Fadal podcast last week. He’s referencing the song “The Impossible Dream” from the musical The Man of La Mancha.

“And then I realized, ‘There’s nothing to beat.’ It’s not a fight,” he added. “I don’t want to meet this with any kind of resistance. I want to meet it with ease and joy and healing. So my impossible dream is possible. It’s just to heal — not just the physical, but my whole self.”

Aaron is best known for starring in musicals like The Light in the Piazza, Les Miserables, and The Phantom of the Opera. He has recorded a new album, The Impossible Dream, featuring huge Broadway stars and it will be released on August 16.

“This album is incredibly special, not just because it is my debut album but also because it is an extraordinary opportunity to celebrate what I’m learning: We all have the power within us to make the impossible possible and we help each other heal. My heart is so full to work with such truly magnificent artists and friends. I thank them and the Broadway community for their incredible love and support,’” he said in a statement. “As we raise awareness to end ALS, I hope fans of Broadway and music will enjoy this Impossible Dream come true!”

You can pre-order the album now.
