Jonathan Groff Tears Up After Winning First Tony Award, Gives Touching Speech - Watch Video!

Jonathan Groff teared up during his Tony Award speech and it made us a little teary too!

The 39-year-old actor won his first Tony at the 2024 Tony Awards on Sunday (June 16) at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City.

Jonathan won Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical for his performance in the musical Merrily We Roll Along. His co-star Daniel Radcliffe also won!

During his teary speech, Jonathan had some beautiful words to say about his family.

“Thank you for letting me dress up like Mary Poppins when I was 3. Thank you for letting me act out scenes from I Love Lucy on my 10th birthday. Thank you for always allowing my freak flag to fly without ever making me feel weird about it,” he said. “Even if they didn’t always understand me, my family knew the lifesaving power of fanning the flame of a young person’s passions without judgment. I walked through life with an open heart because you let me know that I could.”

Jonathan also thanked everyone who was involved in Spring Awakening, his first Broadway hit.

″[You] not only made that dream come true but also inspired me to come out of the closet when I was 23,” he said. “I’m now 39 and musical theater is still saving my soul.”
