Saturday sport: URC disappointment for Leinster and Munster, Euro wins for Italy and Spain

Soccer

Euro 2024 continues today with three games down for decision.

In the first fixture of the day, Switzerland got their campaign off to a winning start against Hungary, ending their Group A meeting in Cologne 3-1.

In the 5pm kick-off, three-time European champions Spain beat Croatia 3-0, while the last game of the day saw reigning champions Italy beat Albania 2-1 in Dortmund.

In the tournament opener last night, Scotland were thrashed by hosts Germany as Julian Nagelsmann’s side were 5-1 winners in Munich.

Golf

Rory McIlroy is well-placed heading into his third round at the US Open.

He got his third round underway just after 8pm.

Shane Lowry shot a level par 70 to remain on five over par while Tom McKibben finished his on six over.

Gaelic games

All-Ireland Football Championship

In round three, Derry beat Westmeath 2-7 to 0-9 in Newry.

Earlier, Tyrone beat Cork 1-18 to 0-17 in Tullamore, seeing the Ulster men straight through to the final eight, and in Castlebar, Donegal took an easy win over Clare, ending 2-23 to 0-5.

At Pearse Park, Roscommon beat Cavan 2-20 to 1-20.

Tailteann Cup

Three of the weekend’s Tailteann Cup quarter-finals were settled today.

In Newry, Down beat Wicklow 1-18 to 0-12, while Sligo bested Limerick 2-20 to 0-9, and at Brewster Park, Antrim took a 1-11 to 0-11 win over Fermanagh.

All-Ireland Hurling Championship

Dublin will meet Cork in the All-Ireland Hurling preliminary quarter-finals, after the Rebels saw off Offaly 4-25 to 3-19.

Meanwhile, Wexford

In the second preliminary quarter-final, Wexford beat Laois 0-32 to 0-20, seeing them through to a quarter-final against Clare.

Rugby

There was disappointment in Pretoria for Leinster after they suffered a 25-20 loss to the Bulls in the semi-final of the United Rugby Championship.

In the later semi-final at Thomand Park, Munster met a similar fate, losing 17-10 to Glasgow Warriors.
