A man died at the hospital early Saturday morning after a car he was driving hit a utility pole near the border of Mount Vernon and Downtown, Baltimore Police said.

Police responded to the intersection of East Franklin Street and St. Paul Place around 2 a.m. for a call relating to a single vehicle crash.

Officers found a car had struck a utility pole and medics brought the 38-year-old driver and his 35-year-old male passenger to a local hospital. The driver was pronounced dead despite lifesaving measures taken at the hospital. The passenger remains in critical yet stable condition, according to police.

Police said the car was traveling westbound on Orleans Street when the driver lost control. The car jumped the median between Orleans’ eastbound and westbound lanes, becoming airborne before hitting a utility pole.

Police did not identify the car’s occupants pending family notification.

Anyone with information about the crash can contact the department’s accident investigation unit detectives at 410-396-2606.
