Amnesty International urges Taliban to reopen girls’ schools immediately

0

After a thousand days of girls’ schools being closed by the Taliban’s orders, Amnesty International has called on the group to reopen these schools.

The organization said on Friday, June 14 on its social media platform X that Afghan girls have lost their right to education because of the Taliban’s “discriminatory and unjust policies.”

Amnesty International added that the Islamic Taliban’s policies break international laws.

With the hashtag “Education is not a crime,” this human rights body wrote that the Taliban must immediately reopen all secondary and high schools for girls.

A month after regaining control of Afghanistan, the Taliban reopened schools that were closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but they shut the doors of girls’ schools above sixth grade.

This comes amid a dire humanitarian crisis and severe human rights issues in the country. The current regime’s suppressive policies have severely impacted women’s rights, including education and employment.

Women are also restricted from working with aid agencies and domestic organizations. Additionally, their free movement is heavily controlled, further limiting their opportunities.

Media restrictions have worsened the situation, making it difficult for the public to stay informed and for the international community to understand the full extent of the crisis.
