What to watch on TV on Saturday 15 June, from Trooping The Colour to Doctor Who’s two-part finale
IT’S a special day for the King as he attends the spectacular Trooping The Colour, which airs live on BBC1.
The Royal Family will be in attendance for the King’s Birthday Parade, but in case you’ve already missed it, you can catch up on iPlayer.
And it’s a big night for the king of time travel too, as we reach the penultimate episode of Doctor Who, which kicks off the two-part series finale.
Here are TV Mag’s six telly picks for Saturday 15 June 2024…
Doctor Who (6.30pm BBC1)
While showrunner Russell T Davies was keen for all of the episodes of this most recent series to be enjoyed as stand-alone stories, there has been an undeniable theme running through them all – that of Ruby Sunday’s abandonment at birth on a doorstep.
The recurring flurries of snow have made us all wonder, and as this season comes to a gripping two-part finale, we are about to get some answers.
The Doctor is desperate to help his friend get the truth she’s looking for, and calls in help from UNIT.
Jemma Redgrave and Bonnie Langford guest-star in both episodes, which will also be shown in cinemas across the country.
Hold on to your sonic screwdrivers, we’re in for an emotional ride in the TARDIS…
Celebrity Bridge Of Lies (5.45pm BBC1)
Ross Kemp fronts another celebrity episode of the high-stakes quiz where teams have to make it over that ‘bridge’ without stepping on the lies that are there to catch them out.
This week a team from Morning Live are stepping up to the challenge, as presenter Gethin Jones, Dr Ranj Singh, baking expert Bryony May Williams and chef Anna Haugh hope their varied expertise will help them win big money for their chosen charities.
Kate & Queen Elizabeth: A Special Relationship (9pm C5)
This new documentary looks at the bond between two of the most influential royals in history – the late Queen Elizabeth II and the Princess of Wales.
From their first meeting to what they were like behind closed doors, the film combines personal anecdotes, rarely seen footage and expert commentary to shed new light on how the Queen mentored and guided Kate.
Rooney 2004: World At His Feet (10.30pm BBC1)
It’s 20 years since a teenage Wayne Rooney announced his arrival on the world stage as part of England’s Euro 2004 squad.
It was to be a dramatic 12 days for the legendary striker, beginning with a breath-taking brace against Switzerland and ending in despair against Portugal in the quarter-finals, when he broke his foot.
This nostalgic documentary takes us back to that time and features interviews with Wayne himself, Michael Owen, Sven-Göran Eriksson and more.
Later… With Jools Holland (9.55pm BBC2)
Richard Hawley returns to Later… to showcase tracks from his new album In This City They Call You Love, which is an ode to his hometown, Sheffield.
Also on tonight’s bill is American singer-songwriter Remi Wolf, who makes her Glastonbury debut next weekend.
Another artist appearing on Later… for the first time is BBC 6 Music favourite Nia Archives, whose new album Silence Is Loud could herald a new Jungle era.
Trooping The Colour 2024: The King’s Birthday Parade (10.30am BBC1)
Broadcast live from the heart of London, the Irish Guards are trooping their colour on Horse Guards Parade.
The ceremonial military parade honours the Monarch’s birthday, and King Charles III will be in attendance.
Due to his ongoing cancer treatment, the King will ride in a carriage rather than on horseback as he did last year.
Following an impressive spectacle of military precision that’s well known around the world, there’ll be the annual RAF flypast and the Royal Family’s appearance on the Buckingham Palace balcony.
Clare Balding hosts live coverage of the event, with highlights on BBC2 at 5.50pm.
