Massachusetts Launches Public Education Campaign Against Pregnancy Centers

0

This week, Gov. Maura Healey of Massachusetts launched a public education campaign to highlight “the dangers and potential harm of anti-abortion centers.” Pregnancy crisis centers were relabeled as “Anti-Abortion Centers” that seek to emotionally manipulate and misinform pregnant women about their options.

The Healey-Driscoll Public Education Campaign

The ad campaign is the first of its kind in the United States. It began on June 10 and is projected to run for “many months this year,” according to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health Commissioner Robbie Goldstein. A total of $1 million taxpayer dollars from the 2023 fiscal year will be used to fund the campaign. (READ MORE: RFK Is Many Things, but He Is Not Pro-Life)

The campaign claims pregnancy crisis centers provide misleading information and prevent or dissuade women from having abortions while posing as medical facilities offering reproductive health care, including abortion.

Ads against the “anti-abortion centers” will be on the radio, transit, social media, and billboards.

The education campaign was created by the Massachusetts Department of Health and the Reproductive Equity Now Foundation. Slogans include “Avoid Anti-Abortion Centers,” “They try to limit your options if you’re pregnant,” and “Get care you can trust.” Care that is recommended through the government website

Purpose of the Campaign

The campaign lumps all pregnancy crisis centers together as medical facilities. From this generalization, they are quick to point out that only four of the centers in Massachusetts are subject to the Department of Health licensure. It also attempts to paint pregnancy centers as organizations that exist only to prevent abortion rather than to support pregnant women. (READ MORE: Abortions Are on the Rise, Planned Parenthood Proudly Reports)

Many centers, however, are not medical facilities. The centers instead focus on supporting pregnant women by giving them supplies such as car seats and baby clothes and ensuring they understand their options regarding their pregnancy. Pregnancy crisis center websites also specify whether they provide medical care.

Pregnancy Crisis Centers

In Massachusetts, there are at least double the number of pregnancy crisis centers as abortion clinics. Many operate near abortion clinics.

This is not the first time they have been targeted by Massachusetts. In 2022, Healey placed a consumer advisory on them. The advisory warns people that the centers do not provide “comprehensive reproductive care.” Massachusetts pregnancy centers have also suffered attacks carried out by the notorious group Jane’s Revenge. The campaign to educate the public by the Massachusetts government is specifically targeting women’s options outside of abortion. Pregnancy crisis centers that supply resources and compassion are being vilified with the name “anti-abortion centers.”

Women deserve better than that.
