The ammonia is their poo is even rotting buildings.

And if fed regularly, pigeons can become extremely territorial and aggressive.

Scientists are to discuss humane contraceptive plans rather than culls at a conference on wildlife fertility control at York University.

Expert Dr Marco Pellizzari said: “Pigeons reproduce up to eight times a year and have a life expectancy of five years, which means it is no surprise their population is growing so rapidly.”

The boffin, of Italy’s Bologna University, added: “They are well loved, still, but public opinion is now shifting towards controlling numbers.

“The overpopulation of pigeons is creating numerous issues.

“They pick open bin bangs, they defecate on monuments, buildings and sometimes on people’s heads — now there is a broad agreement we need to limit their numbers and fertility control is the best answer.”

Contraception which inhibits egg hatchability in pigeons can be administered manually or via automatic feeder.

If successful, it could also be used to control grey squirrels, wild boar, deer, goats and rats — as the issue is predicted to worsen.

Conference host Dr Giovanna Massei said: “We must identify alternatives to the traditional ways to manage wildlife.

“Fertility control, alone or combined with traditional methods, could provide solutions.”
