SEE IT: Beloved bodega cat taken from Manhattan store
MANHATTAN, N.Y. (PIX11) --- A beloved bodega cat is missing after a woman was caught on camera taking the adorable feline from the Upper West Side store earlier this week, video shows.
On Tuesday morning, the owner, Adam, opened a can of food for Susu in the bodega, Royal Convenient near Amsterdam Avenue and West 74th Street, and when he went back to check if he had finished his food, he noticed the gray-haired cat was gone.
"I thought he was coming back," Adam, 34, told PIX11 News Friday. "I'm very sad right now. I miss my cat."
The owner then immediately checked his store's cameras and saw a woman playing with Susu before picking it up and walking away, he said. In the video, Susu is lying on the sidewalk in front of the bodega when a blonde woman walking by stops to play with the 9-month-old cat.
The woman, dressed in jeans and carrying a purple backpack, appears to look around for a possible owner before she kneels and pets Susu before picking him up and walking away, according to the footage.
"I wasn't thinking she was going to take him," Adam said.
The owner said Susu is mostly an indoor cat and likes to hang out in the store and be spoiled by customers. But Susu sometimes ventures outside for some fresh air when it's hot but always comes back in.
The owner has had Susu since he was born, and he's been a hit with customers, who sometimes make the long trek into Manhattan just to play with Susu, Adam said.
The day before the cat disappeared, a loyal customer, Mandy, was at a different bodega on 107th Street playing with another cat when Adam told her about Susu.
"He was very upset," Mandy said. "The cat is very sweet."
Adam said he didn't initially file a police report because he thought Susu would come back, but now he will be forced to contact the authorities.
"Bring my cat back. I need my cat back," he said.
