Mark Feygin is the founder and CEO of PowerSetter, which is the leading energy comparison platform in the United States.

He shared his list of the best types of trees to plant in your yard to maximize shade and savings.

Incorporating a few of these outside your house could help decrease energy bills.

CHEAPEST CHOICE

Feygin suggested two picks that don’t cost much to purchase and are easy to take care of.

He said Eastern Redbuds aren’t expensive and are “so easy to maintain.”

The reason is that they thrive in just about any soil or weather environment.

He said the tree’s “thick coat of pink and purple flowers don’t scream cheap.”

He added that they’ll make your garden “look rich and full of life.”

Feygin also recommended another “great alternative” to upgrade your outdoor space

White pines are trees that are both low-cost and low-effort.

They may not grow as quickly as other options, but they have several other benefits.

“Its full branches will keep your garden covered without needing too much TLC [tender loving care],” he explained.

FASTEST FOLIAGE

If you’re looking for a tree option to plant that is fast-growing, then look no further.

Feygin said a hybrid poplar or willow tree offers “immediate relief” when you’re starting to burn up.

  1. Banana peels, vinegar, and coffee grounds are often recommended as natural fertilizers.
  2. Dollar Tree sells four packs of seeds for $1.25.
  3. Try a vertical planter like Amazon’s Mr. Stacky 5 Tier Stackable Planter, $35 to make more use of a small space.
  4. Use netting like the Garden Netting Pest Barrier, $8, from Amazon to keep away bugs that eat your vegetables.
  5. Try sacrificial planting to reduce the use of pesticides and keep pests away from your garden. Deliberately growing certain plants to attract agricultural pests can keep them away from the plants you want to protect. Examples include marigolds, lavender, catnip, and chives.
  6. For pesky weeds in your garden, the Grampa’s Weeder – The Original Stand-Up Weed Puller Tool with Long Handles, $45, from Amazon is a helpful tool you can use without having to bend over.

He joked that you “don’t have to wait a decade” for them to sprout.

“They’re both incredibly fast-growing, so your garden will offer an escape from the heat in just a few short years,” he added.

OVERALL OPTION

When it comes to Feygin’s pick for the best overall tree to invest in for your outdoor space, he had to go with maple trees.

“Maples with vibrant foliage, and light and airy birch — are your best choice,” he said.

Shade or deciduous trees like maples shed their leaves for a part of every year and remain bare until they grow new leaves each spring.

“They lose their leaves in the winter too, allowing sunlight to pass through and keep your home toasty warm,” he added.

Although they are empty during the late fall and winter, they get thick and full in summer.

This will provide plenty of shade so you can stop relying on air conditioning to keep your house cool.
