Friday Poll: The Utah What?

0

What should the NHL’s new team be called?

The NHL will have a new look next year after the Arizona Coyotes have howled their last time (for now at least) and moved to Utah.

The Kraken nailed it with their color scheme in the last go round for the previous new team, and Utah is going for, a very sharp on the ice with black, white and a light blue. Incorporating the outline of the state is a nice touch.

The team will need that name eventually, and (as seen above) thought it won’t be for this immediate season there are some finalists coming to light.

Now it’s poll time, thoughts on the names below it.

Personally, I don’t like the HC non-name of a name. What would the mascot be? How do you market it or grow in popularity? Not having a name is a cop out and ill-fitting for North American pro sports. This is probably the only one I don’t want them to have, it’s fine to deal with for the first season while they get settled and make a plan but it has to be more than just “Utah Hockey Club”. What kind of hockey club?

Mammoth sounds dumb to say outloud, and the Blizzard encroaches a little too much on the Avalanche for me. (Then again, we’ve got a Canuck and a Canadien in this league, so who knows), bringing up the bottom half of the choices. Maybe either would grow over time but those two are in my “meh” category.

The other three choices are completely acceptable. Venom is kinda weird to be a singular word but has local ties to invoke the outdoors and the snakes they apparently have out that way. The Yeti is polarizing but a fun thing to say. I’m biased on that since in the youth leagues we had a Yeti team and I always liked it.

Personally, give me Outlaws all day as a top choice. Theme it up with an old-timey Western motiff and we’re really cookin’ with gas now. It helps that there’s a nice roll off the tongue with the syllables and phonetically pleasing sound of U-TAH OUT-LAW. Try it. Not sure how or why but it sounds right.

OK, enough of that breakdown. Weigh in and sound off about the choices you like or don’t like the most
