Every Senate Republican Signs Letter Supporting IVF

0

Every single Republican U.S. Senator on Wednesday signed a statement of “strong” support for legal in-vitro fertilization (IVF) across the country.

“Senate Democrats have embraced a Summer of Scare Tactics – a partisan campaign of false fearmongering intended to mislead and confuse the American people,” read the statement signed by all 49 members of the Senate Republican Conference. “In vitro fertilization is legal and available in every state across our nation. We strongly support continued nationwide access to IVF, which has allowed millions of aspiring parents to start and grow their families.”

Sen. Katie Britt, R-AL, posted the statement on her Senate website. Along with Sen. Ted Cruz, R-TX, Britt introduced a pro-IVF bill last month which many critics denounced as “feeding” a leftist narrative.

Senate Democrats blocked the bill Wednesday – the same day Republicans released their pro-IVF statement.

Britt and outgoing Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-KY, were the two lead signatories of Wednesday’s statement.

NBC News Senior National Political Reporter Sahil Kapur noted on X (formerly Twitter) that the statement came “ahead of a Senate vote [Thursday] on a Democratic-led bill codifying protections for IVF and assisted reproductive technology.”

Sen. Tammy Duckworth, D-IL, introduced the Democrats’ pro-IVF bill, which observers have called more extreme than Britt’s and Cruz’s bill. As expected, Republicans blocked the Democratic bill Thursday.

Last week, CatholicVote Director of Government Affairs Tom McClusky warned that federal Republican lawmakers are walking into a trap on life issues – such as IVF, abortion, and contraception – set by Democrats.

McClusky noted that by continuing to play rhetorical defense in response to Democratic actions on these issues, Republicans will inadvertently boost President Joe Biden’s struggling reelection bid.

“In this current election, voter attention is focused squarely on inflation, the border, crime, and the economy,” McClusky explained:

That is why Joe Biden and the Democrats are working so hard to instead have voters focus on issues that the Democrats feel they are stronger on. Topics like abortion, IVF, and contraception.

So what do the Republicans want to focus on? You guessed it: abortion, IVF, and contraception!
