Escaped prisoner captured in Queen Anne’s County after nearly day-long search, police say
A prisoner who escaped from an Annapolis hospital Thursday morning was captured on the Eastern Shore Friday by law enforcement officers, according to the Annapolis Police Department.
James Cash Gregory, 35, was sent from the Jennifer Road Detention Center to the Anne Arundel Medical Center for treatment, Anne Arundel Police said.
At approximately 11 a.m. Thursday, however, he walked out of the hospital, launching a nearly day-long search that ended in Queen Anne’s County, Annapolis Police spokesperson Miguel Dennis told The Capital.
Gregory was captured by Maryland State Police and allied agencies, Dennis said, unable to confirm where in Queen Anne’s or when the escapee was found.
Maryland State Police did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Gregory’s escape came less than a week after his arrest, court records show, and a day after he was denied bond in Glen Burnie District Court.
Gregory, a Washington D.C. resident, was apprehended Saturday on theft, weapon and trespassing charges, according to the Maryland Judiciary. He also faces attempted theft, fraud and resisting arrest charges.
His charging documents were not available to review Thursday afternoon. The Anne Arundel County Police Department did not respond to a request for its arrest report.
Gregory is scheduled for a one-day trial in Annapolis District Court on Aug. 2. Though the public defender’s office has entered its appearance in the case, a specific attorney was not listed in court records.
Gregory has previous convictions in multiple Maryland jurisdictions.
In 2013, Gregory pleaded guilty to second-degree assault and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle in Prince George’s County and was sentenced to approximately two-and-a-half years of jail time.
In 2015, Gregory pleaded guilty to motor vehicle theft in Prince George’s County and then, in 2020, pleaded guilty to robbery in Montgomery County. It was unclear in either case how long Gregory was sentenced.
Representatives at the state’s attorney’s offices in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties were not immediately available for comment.
