FOX45 News: Convicted sex offender, felon escapes from Baltimore facility, agents say
A convicted sex offender who investigators say also fatally shot a man escaped from a Baltimore facility in December, according to the U.S. Marshals Service.
Hakeem Burroughs, 33, is wanted by federal and local police.
On Dec. 12, 2023, investigators say Burroughs disappeared from Volunteers of America, a re-entry facility in Baltimore. The facility aims to help inmates transition back into society.
Investigators say Burroughs had been transferred to the facility to serve out the remainder of his sentence for voluntary manslaughter.
In 2016 investigators say Burroughs and another man got into an argument in Washington, D.C.
When the victim turned his back, investigators say Burroughs pulled out a gun and opened fire.
“Eventually that verbal altercation turned violent. Burroughs pulled out firearm and shot him in the back three times,” said Al Maresca, Deputy Marshal with the U.S. Marshals Service.
The victim was pronounced dead at an area hospital.
Burroughs was later sentenced to eight years in prison, followed by several years probation for the crime.
The judge weighed the offense and Burroughs’ criminal record, which dates back more than 15 years.
Investigators say Burroughs has a number of arrests for robbery, assault, theft and, in 2013, was convicted of a sex crime involving a minor.
“Burroughs was found guilty of sexual abuse of a minor and as a result is labeled at Tier 3 Sex Offender in the state of Maryland,” said Maresca. “This means he’s required to register as sex offender for life.”
Burroughs is now wanted by federal police on an escape charge and Baltimore City Police for failure to properly register as a sex offender.
