Glastonbury weather 2024: Met Office issues update on festival forecast as fans plan to pack wellies after rain warning
THE Met Office has told festivalgoers heading to Glastonbury to pack their wellies – and sun cream.
Music lovers will be starting to prepare for their getaway, and wanting to know what to throw in their bag for the five-day gig.
And forecasters have now given an early insight into what weather to expect from Wednesday next week – when the likes of Dua Lipa and Coldplay will be getting ready to take the stage.
The Met Office said there was a chance of downpours – suggesting Brits should pack their raincoats and wellies for the much-loved festival.
But they added the sun could come out, too – and the mercury may be warmer than average.
Met Office’s Nicky Maxey told the Mirror: “The general signals for the time show a low pressure in the south west.
“If that comes into play we could expect to see sun in the south and rain in the north.
“At the moment we have fairly dry ground which would be good for the festival, although that could change as there is rain forecast today which would change things, although how I’m not sure.
“We will have a much better idea as to what to expect in the coming days, as we get closer to Glastonbury.
“We look at trends and at the moment they are fairly weak.”
Another forecaster, Met Office’s Stephen Dixon, told the Independent: “While it’s too early to give a forecast for Glastonbury Festival, the weather in the area this week will start largely dry, before turning more wet and unsettled from Thursday onwards.
“The UK currently has a cool pool of air from the north, leading to slightly subdued temperatures compared to what you’d normally expect for the time of year.
“From Thursday, rain will move in from the west and bring some persistent rain for a time.”
In its long-range forecast, the Met Office said: “There is little sign for any one type of weather pattern to dominate during this period.
“As such, typical conditions for the UK are most probable with a mixture of weather types.
“All areas can expected to see some spells of drier, sunnier weather, but there will also be showers or longer spells of rain at times.
“Currently the only signals, weak as they are, hint that rain and showers will tend to be more biased towards the north and west, with any more prolonged drier interludes favouring the south.
“Temperatures are most likely to be close to or slightly above climatological average.”
Glastonbury Festival kicks off on Wednesday next week and runs through until the Sunday.

A “Glasto veteran” this week revealed what need to remember to take – and leave behind.
Harriet Flook has been to the event 12 times and said being prepared is the best thing you can do.
She wrote: “Trust me, you don’t want to be carrying everything in, it’s a long walk on the first day (For full transparency, I overpack every year, but I promise I’m getting better).
“There are a couple of items that over the years I’ve found make your life much easier and the festival run smoother.
“Glastonbury festival is the size of a small city, so I’ll start by saying if you get stuck you’ll be able to buy most things but try not to be wasteful – the whole ethos and vibe of the festival is to save the planet, plus you’ll save cash.”

Today:
Outbreaks of rain becoming slow moving across northern Scotland and Shetland where winds will also be gusty. Elsewhere after a bright start, showers developing widely, these becoming heavy and perhaps thundery during the afternoon. Remaining on the cool side.
Tonight:
More persistent rain across Shetland slow to clear north. Showers continuing to affect most areas, but becoming less frequent across parts of Scotland. Chilly under longer clear spells.
Saturday:
After a chilly start for some, Saturday promises a day of sunny spells and showers, these locally heavy, with a continued risk of thunder, Still feeling rather cool.
Outlook for Sunday to Tuesday:
Sunny spells and scattered showers on Sunday and Monday, these locally heavy, but some places staying dry. Tuesday mainly dry for all. Feeling warm in the sunshine with winds easing.
June 18-June 27
It is most probable that initially fine conditions will prevail for most, with more changeable conditions with cloud and some rain being confined to the far north and northwest, temperatures will likely be close to or slightly above average. Although even during this time, a few daytime showers could pop up in the east. However, there is a slight chance of an alternative scenario that initially an area of cloud could edge northwestwards from Europe and bring a few days of thundery rain and fairly hot / humid conditions to the southeast. Into the last week of June, on balance it appears more probable that milder than average conditions will continue, with the wind from the southerly quadrant. During this time rainfall looks quite variable (some places dry others wet).
June 28-July 12
