CROWLEY, La. (KLFY)-- The West Crowley cemetery has over 1,000 tombs, but this is the first time an open tombstone has been seen; it is now covered but was open a few days ago. News 10 spoke to management with the cemetery who said the cemetery is not being kept up by the community.

"It seems as though this person wasn't in a casket, so that's why the bones were shown once the piece of the cement fell in, and that's probably what happened," "The cement was old enough and all cracked up, and it could've been stepped on."

The picture was taken by a resident who was in the cemetery when they discovered it was opened. A skull was found lying in the tombstone. Cynthia Robinson said the family of the deceased is unknown at this time.

"We don't know who the family members are because they have no headstone," Robinson said.

Andre Winters, a resident, said he voluntary comes to the cemetery to clean his family's tombstones. He encourages others to do the same.

"If you take a little bit of energy, and you come out here and take care of your family and a couple that's in between, it wouldn't cost her much of nothing to keep it up," Winters said. "It's up to us to take care of it."

Edna Robinson said she's been the manager of West Crowley cemetery for 40 years. She said she does her best to keep up the cemetery, mowing the lawn and cleaning trash thrown into the cemetery.

"I don't cut just what I'm supposed to cut," Edna Robinson said. "I cut the whole cemetery, so that means a whole lot of citizens in Crowley are getting a free ride because they're not doing what they're supposed to do."

She urges the community to help her keep the cemetery in good shape if they want conditions to improve.

"It's rough," she said. "I walk around, and I look and I see what's going on. Most of the time I've got a bag of garbage by the time I get around. I am not paid. I am not hired. Everything I do is on a voluntary basis."
