Clarence Thomas took 3 more private jet trips footed by GOP billionaire: reports

0

Supreme Court Justice Thomas jetted around on Texas billionaire conservative Harlan Crow's private plane between 2017 and 2021 — at least three more times than he previously disclosed, according to documents secured and released by the Senate Judiciary Committee, according to multiple reports.

The revelations that Crow offered up to the committee show Thomas flying from St. Louis, Missouri, to Kalispell, Montana, and a final landing spot in Dallas two days later.

A second trip on Crow's private plane, according to the reports, occurred in March 2019, where Thomas flew out of Washington, D.C., to Savannah, Georgia, and then back.

It was also reported that in June 2021, Thomas hopped on a roundtrip flight between Washington D.C. and San Jose, California.

Previously, Thomas admitted accepting comped trips by the Texas megadonor, known to be keep chummy relationships with marquee conservatives.

He admitted to Crow footing the bill for two 2019 trips to Bali and membership to a private California club, according to The Washington Post, which obtained the disclosures.

"The Senate Judiciary Committee’s ongoing investigation into the Supreme Court’s ethical crisis is producing new information - like what we’ve revealed today - and makes it crystal clear that the highest court needs an enforceable code of conduct, because its members continue to choose not to meet the moment,” Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) who chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee said in a statement.

This week, Durbin tried to get a bill pushed on the floor to institute ethics reforms at the Supreme Court, but it was "blocked" by Republicans.

Crow spokesman Michael Zona responded to Thomas' addendum itineraries, saying through Zona Thursday: “Mr. Crow reached an agreement with the Senate Judiciary Committee to provide information responsive to its requests going back seven years."

He added: “Despite his serious and continued concerns about the legality and necessity of the inquiry, Mr. Crow engaged in good faith negotiations with the Committee from the beginning to resolve the matter. As a condition of this agreement, the Committee agreed to end its probe with respect to Mr. Crow."

The highest court in the land has faced scrutiny with its ethical standing.

Questions have swirled around Justice Clarence Thomas and Justice Samuel Alito's lavish acceptance of gifts and vacations (also paid-for by right-wing billionaires with business interests before the court). That includes recent reports about the display of MAGA and Christian nationalist symbol flags on Alito's property at the time he was unsuccessfully urging the court to take up a challenge to Pennsylvania's certification of former President Donald Trump's 2020 election loss.

The court adopted a new code of ethics at the tail end of last year.

The code has been criticized as inadequate, as any potentially questionable behavior can only be policed by the justices themselves.
