Accessibility mats roll out at Yaquina Head beach just in time for tide pool season
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – It’s tide pool season, and the Bureau of Land Management doesn’t want anyone to miss out on the Oregon Coast’s incredible ecosystem.
The Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area rolled out 145 feet of nonslip accessibility mats for those who rely on wheels or crutches while visiting the beach.
The BLM said in a post on social media they made the investment “so more of our visitors can get to see the tide pools, the beach, and everything Yaquina Head has to offer.”
Just last week, exceptionally low tides gifted beachgoers with a series of great tide pool viewing days, according to Oregon State Parks.
Oregon State Parks Ranger Supervisor Travis Korbe previously told KOIN 6 News that the low tides are a good opportunity for people of all ages to visit the state's many tide pools.
“The intertidal ecosystems that are exposed during these low tides give visitors to the coast a glimpse into a diverse environment that we otherwise are unable to visit,” Korbe said. “A visit to tide pools along the Oregon Coast can often be the highlight of a visit and create lifelong memories.”
KOIN 6 Meteorologist Josh Cozart forecasts that the lowest tides will occur on the following dates:
- June 22-24
- July 5-6
- July 21-23
- August 19-20
“July and August weather is also normally drier, warmer and sunnier than other points in the year,” Cozart said. “So these low tides and nice weather days will be perfect to explore the Oregon Coast’s tide pools.”
