Toney Cascarino thinks Dominic Solanke could be ready to make a big move to a side like Tottenham or Chelsea but the pundit suggested that neither London club would be prepared to meet the huge release clause in the striker’s contract.

Could Tottenham move for Dominic Solanke?

Solanke has improved leaps and bounds over the last 12 months and has hit new heights since Andoni Iraola’s arrival at Bournemouth.

The Cherries have become a front-foot, offensive outfit under the Spanish coach and the striker has benefited, finishing the 2023-24 campaign with 21 goals across all competitions.

The 26-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to Tottenham, with Football Insider reporting at the start of last week that Ange Postecoglou’s men had expressed a ‘concrete interest’ in securing the player this summer as they aim to fill the void left by Harry Kane’s departure last summer.

Just a few days ago, TBR Football explained that Solanke’s contract on the South Coast contains a release clause of around £65m, which can only be activated by Tottenham, Arsenal, Chelsea, Man Utd, Man City and Liverpool.

Solanke would be a better fit for Chelsea than Spurs

However, Cascarino doubts if any of those clubs would be willing to activate the England international’s clause on the back of just one good season

When asked which club the striker could join this summer, the pundit said on talkSPORT (8/6/2024, 7:43 am): “I would probably, I am showing my bias here, probably slightly Chelsea. I am not sure a club will pay £65million for Dominic Solanke. He had a terrific season. You have had an outstanding season. There’s a much bigger picture there.

“If you look over his career in total, then Dominic has improved, he got goals in the Championship, he didn’t really in his younger days he didn’t really make it at Liverpool, they let him go, they didn’t think he was good enough.

“I still think it’s a lot of money for someone that if he had gone in and had two, three seasons scoring huge amounts like Ollie Watkins has got goals regularly year by year, increase regularly. I don’t know if we just saw a standout season by Solanke there.

“Not saying he is not a really good player because he has improved a hell of a lot and fair play to him for that. Would I want to pay £65million? I am not sure Spurs or Chelsea would want to go that deep.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Given the Premier League’s decision to strictly implement PSR, one would expect spending to drop across the division this summer, which is why I highly doubt anyone would be willing to activate the £65m clause. However, Bournemouth might be tempted to accept any offer in the £50m range for the striker.
