A MAKEUP artist has revealed a widely accepted technique that’s actually making people look older.

The expert also explained why people should avoid applying makeup with their fingers in an interview with The U.S. Sun.

Wayne Goss (@waynegoss), a makeup artist and YouTuber, warned against a popular blush tip that changes the shape of your face.

He explained that the common rule-of-thumb was more rule-of-dumb and ages those who follow it.

“People make the big mistake of smiling when they add on blusher,” Goss said.

“This is a common mistake that people do too often. Ultimately, it lifts the cheeks and what goes up, must come down at some point.

“This means the blusher will be lower than needs be, making you look older.”

For a youthful look, Goss advises keeping makeup “simple and consistent.”

“Any make-up that is super over-the-top will imply that you’re trying to hide too much underneath,” he said.

“Find a look that suits you and stick to it. Not only will you look younger in person, but your photos will also look much more graceful too!”

Goss recently launched his latest line of affordable synthetic brushes, The White Gold Collection, in May.

The pro explained that when it comes to budget, a quality brush set doesn’t always have to break the bank.

A few tell-tale signs can help budget shoppers sniff out red flags and low-grade materials.

“Look for soft bristles; that’s always a great starting point,” Goss said.

The pro also recommends beauty fans inspect the handle, or ferrule, of a brush before purchasing.

“Ensuring that the construction of the bristles is well thought out is also key, and that the ferrule is locking in the hairs by ensuring that it is really tight,” he explained.

You’re able to get an intricate application with a make-up brush that you can’t get with your fingers.

“Generally speaking, a good makeup brush will feel soft and you can tell there’s quality there.

“A bad quality brush will have hard fibers and [the] general construction will look poor – think drugstore.

Goss stressed that “makeup brushes are very important” and shouldn’t be replaced by your fingers.

“You’re able to get an intricate application with a make-up brush that you can’t get with your fingers, and while fingers can apply a product, you can’t blend the likes of eyeshadow with your fingers,” he said.

Those looking to extend the life of their brushes for as long as possible should pay attention to their brush care habits.

“Do not get the ferrule wet and don’t get water into the ferrule at any point as this could loosen the glue,” Goss advised.

Goss also encouraged beginners to invest in a lineup of go-to brushes for a flawless base.

“A foundation brush is key as well as a blusher and powder bronzer brush to ensure you’re able to blend properly,” he said.

“Having two eye brushes is also key, as you’ll need one for a blender brush and one for your creases.”

A good foundation brush can prevent a messy look, but the way the foundation is applied matters.

“Never saturate a brush with foundation. The best process is to dot foundation around your face and use the brushes to blend it in properly to avoid any streakyness on your face,” Goss said.

“Many people will dip their brush into their foundation and rub it over their face, and then question why it’s streaky. You need to have the foundation on your face before — this is huge.”

The right tool can make or break an eyeshadow, blush, or highlight look.

“Crease brushes are your best friend when it comes to eyeshadow. You can use this to apply to the lid all over and also blend,” he said.

“As for blusher, generally speaking, follow the natural lines of your cheek. Blusher needs to apply to your cheekbone and not the apple of your cheek.”

“Highlighter needs to be placed over the brush placement so that there’s harmony and synchrony.”
