3 Portland-area sushi restaurants among best in the US, according to Yelp
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – Three sushi restaurants in the Portland metro area have been named among the best in the United States, with one food cart ranking in the top 10 spots, according to Yelp's list of the top 100 sushi spots in 2024.
Yelp reviewers identified the best places for expertly-made sushi across the US from a food truck in Hawaii to an intimate sushi bar in New York City – praising the restaurants for their fresh ingredients and highly-trained chefs.
“From simple nigiri to beautifully decorated sushi rolls, the best sushi restaurants in the US feature creative preparations of ultra-fresh seafood,” Yelp said.
Yoshi's Sushi in Portland nabbed the number seven spot on the list, serving "some of the freshest seafood you can find," Yelp said, highlighting the food cart's local albacore, Canadian salmon, and Hawaiian fish offerings.
Chef-owner Yoshimasa Ikeda got his start in the industry in middle school while helping out in his dad’s sushi restaurant in Tokyo, according to Yelp.
After immigrating to the U.S., he worked in several west coast spots before opening his food truck in Portland’s Multnomah French Quarter.
The most popular and most photographed dishes include the Spicy Tuna Roll, Hotate (seared scallop nigiri with house-made orange marmalade), and the Lime Green Roll (a vegan roll filled with sesame spinach salad, cucumber, and roasted peppers – topped with avocado and ginger miso dressing).
One Yelp reviewer remarked, “What a spot. It felt amazing to support someone who seems so genuinely in love with his craft. I was just so excited by how beautiful everything looked, and I knew by the color that everything was super fresh. Portions were generous for the price. In fact, I might be willing to pay more—it was that good.”
Claiming the number 24 spot on the list: Koya Sushi in Beaverton.
The sushi bar said their most popular dishes include the PDX Roll (spicy tuna, crab, avocado, topped with seared salmon, spicy mayo, eel sauce, Masago, and green onion), the California Roll, and miso soup.
Bluefin Tuna & Sushi in Portland claimed the 75th spot.
The restaurant was established as Bluefin Tuna in Seoul, South Korea in 2011.
According to Yelp, popular dishes include Bluefin Tuna Salad, crispy rice rolls, the Mountain on Fire Roll (Hamachi, avocado, and cucumber topped with tempura flakes, spicy & unagi sauce, white mayo, green onion & tobiko), and the Reptar Roll (spicy tuna, apple, and green onion tempura topped with lemon salmon, jalapeno aioli, shichimi, and tobiko).
A nine-seat sushi bar in Seattle, Wash. also received high praise by Yelp reviewers, claiming the fourth spot on the list.
Taneda Sushi received high marks for its ingredients, including rare seafood from Japan's famous Toyosu Fish Market.
One Yelp reviewer said chef-owner Kideaki Taneda takes diners on "a journey that hits on everything from saltiness to sweet, from creamy to savory, from crunchy to smooth."
Restaurants topping the list include Kauai Sushi Station in Lihue, Kauai, Hawaii, Imari Sashimi and Sushi in Upland, Calif., Hamachi Sushi Express in La Habra, Calif., and Omakase by Korami in New York, N.Y.
