‘A Gentleman in Moscow’ will finally get Mary Elizabeth Winstead to the Emmys

0

Husband and wife acting duo Ewan McGregor and Mary Elizabeth Winstead take “A Gentleman in Moscow” by storm with their towering performances.

The Paramount+ show, created by Ben Vanstone, is adapted from the book of the same name by Amor Towles. The story follows McGregor as Count Alexander Ilyich Rostov, an aristocrat who returns to Russia from Paris who ends up spending decades in an attic hotel following the October Revolution. Winstead, meanwhile, plays his love interest, Anna Urbanov, a silent film actress trying to bolster her career. Winstead brings her reliable watchability and charm to this role and her on-screen chemistry with off-screen husband McGregor is one of the best things about the series, as noted by critics.

Maggie Lovitt (Collider) stated: “Their real-life chemistry beautifully carries through into the relationship between Alexander and Anna. They play off each other naturally, and their performances are just as electric, regardless of whether Anna is keeping his delusions of grandeur in check or he’s sprawled out naked on the ground with nothing more than a towel to hide the… Fabergé eggs. McGregor and Winstead’s dynamic is half the fun of ‘A Gentleman in Moscow.'”

Daniel Fienberg (The Hollywood Reporter) observed: “He and real-life spouse Winstead have a chemistry that starts out amusing and becomes rather sweet and well-earned, and Winstead’s take on an actress going from budding ingénue to of-a-certain-age in the blink of an eye is a poignant parallel to the show’s empire rise-and-fall backdrop.”

Josh Sharpe (Paste Magazine) stated: “Winstead plays the role well, leaning heavily into that standard (yet overdone) old-school, seductive actress trope. This marks the third time she has played opposite McGregor, her husband since 2022. They do indeed have sparkling chemistry.”

Our current predicted nominees for Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actress are Jodie Foster (“True Detective: Night Country”), Brie Larson (“Lessons in Chemistry”), Juno Temple (“Fargo”), Sofia Vergara (“Griselda”), Kate Winslet (“The Regime”), and Naomi Watts (“Feud: Capote vs the Swans”). However, Winstead could easily break into this lineup.

Firstly, Winstead is hoping for her first-ever Emmy nomination. This is actually a good category for performers hoping to secure their first bids. Ali Wong (“Beef”), Riley Keough (“Daisy Jones & the Six”), Lizzy Caplan (“Fleischman is in Trouble”), Dominique Fishback (“Swarm”), and Lily James (“Pam & Tommy”) have all landed their first nominations with citations in this category.

Winstead is also starring in a period drama, a genre that is always popular with Emmy voters in this category. The likes of Jessica Chastain (“George & Tammy”), Anya Taylor-Joy (“The Queen’s Gambit”), Cate Blanchett (“Mrs. America”), Michelle Williams (“Fosse/Verdon”), Jessica Lange (“Feud: Bette and Joan”), and Susan Sarandon (“Feud: Bette and Joan”) have all been nominated for starring roles in period dramas.

Plus, let’s take a look at Winstead’s profile as an actress. She’s not quite an ingenue anymore but she is still a relatively young actress who has built up an impressive CV. She shined in her role in “Fargo” while she also featured in “Ahsoka” in the key role of Hera Syndulla (a fan-favorite character). Winstead has also starred in several major movies such as “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World,” “10 Cloverfield Lane,” and “Birds of Prey.” An Emmy nomination would signal the next phase of her career and voters may think now is the right time to reward her.
