Three items football fans must keep in their car when travelling to Euro 2024 this summer or face strict £600 fine

FOOTBALL fans have been warned that they face a £600 fine if they forget three items in their cars when travelling to Euro 2024.

A set of little-known road laws in France and Germany could cost Brits, with European cops keen to catch out UK motorists.

Ian Reid, head of editorial for Carwow, warned drivers that they are required to carry some unusual bits of kit if they make their way to the tournament on EU roads.

He told SunMotors: “When driving through France and Germany it is important you ensure you are carrying the right equipment in your vehicle.

“Some of these may sound like insignificant rules, but don’t dismiss them.

“The French and German police will often stop British-registered vehicles to check they have the correct equipment.”

Since 2008 it has been a legal requirement in France to carry a trio of safety items, with similar rules introduced in Germany in 2014.

Motorists must make sure they have a first aid kit and warning triangle badge in their car at all times in case they are involved in an accident.

You are also required to carry a set of high-vis vests, one per passenger, in the boot.

Also, since most UK cars are right-hand drive as standard, fans travelling from England and Scotland to watch their teams compete will need to use headlamp beam deflectors.

These are available for around £6 on Amazon and prevent you from dazzling drivers of left-hand drive cars coming the other way.

Failure to comply with the laws can result in a fine of around £630 (€750) on the spot.

Darren Miller, car expert at Big Wants Your Car, added: “Following European safety regulations is key for every driver.

“Reflective jackets, warning triangles, and headlamp beam deflectors are mandatory in most places and are necessary for road safety.

“Motorcyclists and moped users must also have safety helmets.

“Not meeting these requirements can lead to fines and increase risks for drivers and passengers.”
