'He could have died': OKC woman wants justice after boyfriend stabbed

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) – An Oklahoma City woman wants a man accused of stabbing her boyfriend outside a northwest metro grocery store to be held accountable.

Court documents say Oklahoma City Police officers responded to an assault call on May 30. An affidavit notes a victim was on the south end of a store near NW 41st and May Avenue and bleeding from a stab wound.

"The doctors said Steven could have died," the victim's girlfriend, Shelly Hoffman, told News 4 on Monday. "Seriously, he could have died."

Documents note that a witness told police that Hoffman and suspect Don Johnson had been arguing because Johnson said she owed him money, but she refused.

Hoffman denied that she owed Johnson anything. The affidavit says that since Hoffman refused to pay up, Johnson confronted her boyfriend and told him that since he couldn't hurt a female, Johnson was going to make her boyfriend pay for it.

"He stabbed him with a shredded butcher knife," said Hoffman.

Documents say that in addition to stabbing Hoffman's boyfriend, Johnson also held a knife to his throat. The witness told police that Johnson said he was going to kill the victim, but the witness begged him not to.

"To see him bleeding like that, man it was horrible," said Hoffman.

Documents say officers were able to track Johnson down to an apartment complex behind the same store. An affidavit notes he was wearing different clothes than he was seen wearing 30 minutes prior in a video provided from a gas station near the crime scene.

After clearing the apartment, documents say officers found a knife on top of a bathroom toilet with fresh blood on it. In the same bathroom, officers found the clothes matching the description Johnson was seen wearing in the gas station video.

"I think he needs to go to prison for attempted murder," said Hoffman.

Johnon is being held in the Oklahoma County jail on a $50,000 bond.

The Oklahoma County District Attorney's office has charged Johnson with assault and battery.
