“It is very nerve-wracking”: Klassen on games at the Nassau County stadium in New York

New York: Following his side’s four-run win against Bangladesh in their ICC T20 World Cup match, South African batter Heinrich Klaasen said that the low-scoring matches at the Nassau County International stadium in New York make the game more competitive and entertaining for the cricketers and hardcore fans. But at the same time he called these matches as ‘not a great selling product’ to the world.

After being restricted to 24/4 at one point, the South Africans managed to reach 113/6 in 20 overs thanks to Klassen’s knock of 46 and David Miller’s steady inning of 29. In reply, fantastic bowling from the likes of Keshav Maharaj, Anrich Nortje and Kagiso Rabada restricted Bangladesh to 109/7 in 20 overs.

This is what Klassen had to say during the post-match press conference when asked if these tough pitches are enjoyable to the players.

“It is still good cricket for the cricket lovers that is out there. If you have to showcase it to the world and sell it, I do not think it’s a great selling product, but for cricket, it is tight competition. It brings the other teams and the higher teams very close to each other, so the game is open to any team that does the basics of cricket very well.”

“For us, it is very nerve-wracking, because every game becomes a really big game. There are no easy games for us especially in our group. So, it is still good entertaining cricket. Everyone is on the edge of their seat and any team can beat any team on the down this on this field,” added Klaasen.

With 3 wins in as many games, South Africa are almost certain to qualify for the Super 8. “We have done our job that was the goal to win three out of three here. It was a little bit harder than what we thought, but that is also good preparation for going into the next phase of this competition,” said Klaasen.
