Cavaliers to interview Borrego, Atkinson in-person this week
The Cavs’ coaching search is moving forward — and perhaps towards a conclusion.
At the moment, the Cleveland Cavaliers and Los Angeles Lakers are the only two NBA teams without a head coach. So, naturally, there’s some overlap in their search. And with Dan Hurley turning down the Lakers, that puts James Borrego into focus as the one candidate linked to both jobs.
In a story from ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, he writes that Borrego is the only other candidate besides Hurley known to visit Los Angeles. In the same paragraph, he says that Borrego is expected to interview in-person with the Cavs early this week, as as Kenny Atkinson.
The only candidate known to visit Los Angeles other than Hurley is New Orleans associate head coach James Borrego. He is currently a finalist for the Cleveland Cavaliers coaching job and is expected to interview in Cleveland early in the week with Golden State Warriors assistant Kenny Atkinson also scheduled for a visit, according to sources.
What isn’t know might be more important. Which job would Borrego prefer if he gets to pick? Do the Cavs have a preference between Borrego or Atkinson at this point? And how will will the in-person interviews factor into the decision? And will Cleveland feel a need to act quickly if they prefer Borrego over Atkinson in order to beat the Lakers to the punch?
This also feels like the job has come down to these two coaches if they are getting in-person interviews. Perhaps this is going to get resolved sooner rather than later.
